If this conversation is real, and just not something you made up (believe me -- I've seen stranger things) I do feel your frustration.
I have always been an atheist. I tried to believe for a while, but it just didn't work. However; during my pre-teen years all the way up to my early twenties, I was a convinced communist. That's right -- not some half-ass pseudo intellectual university student with socialist ideas -- but a real communist. I was raised that way by my mother.
Your conversation with your father seems very similar to the ones I had with my communist friends when I decided to leave Kpml® (Roughly translates into The Communist Party of Marxist-Leninists (revolutionaries)).
The fall of communist Russia and Europe had exposed us all to the true horrors of communism, but some simply refused to see the light. They clung on to their obviously false ideology like a sect. Some of them still do. I believe that what happened to Communists in Sweden, is similiar to what is happening to Christians in the US now.
