"You are in difficulties. Some one has hurt you. You are ill. REPENT!"
This is what I think of as the friends-of-Job Christians. In case you haven't read Job, the plot is simple. Job is a god-fearing man. The devil bets god he can make Job lose faith. God allows the devil to kill Job's cattle, kill his children, cover him in boils etc. Never mind the horribleness of the idea a loving god would allow such a thing, the point is Job's friends come to "comfort" him by suggesting that Job must have done something terrible. In the Bible these friends of Job don't come off well. If there was a hell, a special place in it should be reserved for such "friends."
Nevertheless the idea that sinning leads to misfortune is very Old Testament. That's what the prophets are all about. Israel is suffering because Israelites have turned from god. Repent Israel. It's as pernicious a doctrine as prosperity theology.
The only upside is that Bob Jones University is another institution that seems to specialize in inadvertently making atheists of the very devout. The friends-of-Job attitude moves that right along.

If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
