This is what I think of as the friends-of-Job Christians. In case you haven't read Job, the plot is simple. Job is a god-fearing man. The devil bets god he can make Job lose faith. God allows the devil to kill Job's cattle, kill his children, cover him in boils etc. Job's friends come to "comfort" him by suggesting that Job must have done something terrible. Even in the Bible these friends of Job don't come off well.
But nevertheless I think the idea that sinning leads to misfortune is very Old Testament. That's what the prophets are all about. Israel is suffering because Israelites have turned from god.
It's as pernicious a doctrine as prosperity theology.
The only upside is that Bob Jones University is another institution that seems to specialize in inadvertently making atheists of the very devout.
I get truly pissed off at the victim blaming mentality.
Luckily, most men don't think this way.
