Just out of interest, because I never cared to search through an old book for permission for sexual things, is there an actual unambiguous prohibition of masturbation in the bible? Or is this another one of those things where they take vaguely intersecting single verses from disparate books and use them to construct a patchwork interpretation based on whatever's convenient at the time?

There is no specific command that forbids masturbation. Some use the example of Onan, even though the circumstances make it a poor one. Onan was commanded to bed his dead brother's wife and pulled out before consummating the deed, which isn't quite the way most people masturbate. In any case, he was punished for refusing the command, not because he found a spectacularly awkward way of rubbing one out.

The JWs use 1 Thessalonians 4:4,5 ("Each one of you should know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not with greedy, uncontrolled sexual passion like the nations have that do not know God") and Colossians 3:5 ("Deaden, therefore, your body members that are on the earth as respects sexual immorality, uncleanness, uncontrolled sexual passion, hurtful desire, and greediness, which is idolatry"). A case can be made that masturbation can be included in what Paul is describing. A case can also be made that Paul may have been in more dire need of a good wanking session than anyone, EVER.
