If you're trying to write a book or short story, then you need to introduce the rapist first as a regular guy.
You want people to think he's good or justified. They need to see him as a real person a good happy person. Then they need to see something awful and traumatic happen to him. Something that breaks their heart. Finally they need to see that this MPD is a direct result of said tragedy.
I doubt anyone will call him justified still but they will have more compassion and understanding for him. I'm not really sure how to fit a cult in there, or even if this is what you're going for. I tend to need people to just tell me what they're talking about or else I don't know.
