Learning about how things work is always a bad idea for anyone that bases their life around things that were written hundreds or thousands of years ago.
All religions are an attempt to assign some meaning to things that are not fully understood. Science and education diminish this ignorance as it sheds light on all the absurdities and inconsistencies of faith. Believers will always tend to shy away from anything that could change their delusion.
There are strength in numbers, that's why religion is so prevalent. If just ONE person believed in all the things in the Bible for instance, that person would be considered certifiably insane. But because millions believe, it can't be wrong, right?
People used to think the earth was flat. Many people still believe the earth is only 6000 years old. Science and education have disproved these "unshakable" beliefs, but religion and all the superstition and mythology that it encompasses have become so deeply ingrained that religion represents the most stubborn belief that people are unwilling to shed. My only hope is that one day, 100% of the population will agree that the earth is round. It's been around 400 years since that's been proven and it wouldn't surprise me if some people still don't believe it, or don't care - which is somehow even worse.
