Just look at the doctrine of "Mother" Theresa: Suffering is good and gets you closer to god.

That's the complete opposite to what I have had drummed into me professionally.

There are countless tales of "saints" taking suffering to the highest level. It's kind of a S&M thing really, predominantly in the Roman Catholic church.

I'm not even making fun of them. They've supressed their natural sexual urges and so they go for the whip. There has to be some outlet after all.

I still remember my grandmother telling me how she would have a ruler wrapped across her knuckles in school whenever she was writing left handed - her dominant hand.

To the point where she learned to write right-handed.
