It's pretty simple really. The wages of sin are death. Under the Law all have sinned. You die to the flesh, thereby being released from the Old Covenant and are born again in Christ. You are now under the New Covenant.

The wages of living are death.

If the wages of sin are hell fire or even death, there is a god to suspend death, then god's rather uncivilized. He need a sense of proportion. Even we miserable sinning people have a better sense of proportion than that.
