It is about the stupidest thing I can imagine. You're called to the scene where someone has a gun that may or may not be real. So you drive right up beside the kid, affirm that he has the gun he was stated to have, and just shoot him. Instead of a much more reasonable tactic of parking within earshot of the kid, ordering him to put the gun down, confirming that's it's fake, then leave.

Even if they were planning to shoot the kid on arrival, which I would assume they were, why drive so close to him anyway?

It's very disheartening to see cops murdering people and getting away with it. These are supposed to be the good guys, right? Protectors of the peace. the people you call when you need a problem resolved. I imagine the person who made the call is feeling very bad right now.
