RE: Pope's new statement

It's a pain in the butt to do this with only a smartphone and someone might have already posted the quote by the time I get this done so it may end up bein redundant but here goes:

Some of the best people in history did not believe in God while some of the worst deeds were done in His name". (All caps his)
This seems to me to be a somewhat startling position statement by the head of a body that is hardly a bastion of liberal thinking.
Most of us here hope for the evolution in man's thinking, away from beliefs in mythical gods. Does it seem to anyone other than me that this is a surprising step in that direction?
