Indeed I was about to post something in a similar lines.
"Wings of Honeamisse" (probably spelled that wrong) is completely different to for instance "Bubblegum Crisis" though both are anime.
In the late 80's everything that looked anime was called "Manga" in our country probably because it was one of the first to distribute anime in stores here, which is even worse of a misnomer since "Manga" is not only a brand name, it also means "indecent picture" so it stigmatized anime very much in those years.
