Cats and dogs are an easier example, but the same applies to hamsters and even exotic pets. I'm pretty sure if I ever buy a snake as a pet it'll be much more interesting than converting to Christianity.

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
