It can be the "foxhole" ( for the older members) that helps you save you from Hell. This makes sense from the perspective of a worshiper of Yahweh, who regularly visited plagues and death even on those people whom he considered his chosen nation. Sometimes it was for things other people did (such as massacring 70,000 of them because their king took a census, or killing the baby he bore during an adulterous affair) and sometimes it was because of something they did (Miriam was stricken with leprosy for criticizing Moses, Uzzah was struck dead for trying to keep the ark of the covenant from falling over).
And these were people who already believed! How much harsher would god be with people who believed he didn't exist and blasphemed against him? He'd probably strike that person's whole family with cancer, then kill half of his neighbors just to drive the point home. Which would be something like "aren't you convinced that I am a just and loving god yet?"
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
