I think religion thrives on the idea that people look for some sort of "cosmic justice". They want to think people can't get away with being bad, they will get punished. And the good will be rewarded. Even if it doesn't happen while they are alive. I can see the appeal of that, but the fact is there is no cosmic justice, and it's naive to expect any. All we can do is have sensible laws, enforce them fairly and try to promote good morality.
