Human beings tend to seperate out groups into us and them. When one group becomes the other then it is easier to dehumanize them. You don't need to be religious to dehumanize other groups
The good news is that the more contact we have with other people and different ideas the harder it is to not see them as individuals with the same feelings as you have
I think atheists on average have a better grasp on reality, ON AVERAGE and only right now. It is easy to be the outsider as a minority and rightfully point out the abuse of others. But once you know the totality of our species history it is stupid to presume your current empathy will stay the same forever.
Our ability as a species to be cruel or compassionate is in us, not our labels.
