The key word is "picchiare". It does not mean "to strike lightly"; it means "to beat".

Isn't there a modifier in there, though?

Doesn't 'picchiare un po' have a different meaning than just beat? To be sensible, I think something might be lost in translation. "Beat up a bit" might be the direct translation, which we would say as "smack on the butt," or "lightly striking."

Full honesty: I don't think there's ever a time when a person should use physical violence to correct a child. I am not for corporeal punishment in any way. I won't have any of it when I'm a father.

I just think we all know the church's stance is "spare the rod, spoil the child." This isn't anything new. I don't think that the word "beat" in English is accurately interpreting what the pope was saying.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
