For me it's been gradual - more like FatAndFaithless described. Also I converted to atheism twice. The first time I was in college. Then 20 years later I became a Christian again for a couple of years, because I had failed to do my homework on religion. The last 3 years, I have been doing my homework, so it never happens again.
I feel a bit confused and uncomfortable, because the rest of my family and many of my acquaintances are Christians. I pretend to believe, because I don't want to challenge or disrespect their beliefs. I would like to be a "secular Christian" - similar to a "secular Jew". Unfortunately, I feel like I'm being disrespectful by pretending.
