But by tradition it's the bride's father who foots the bill; so unless that's you, enjoy the ride (aka the bride) and cram as much of the buffet as you can fit into your pockets.
Many father-of-the-brides are rebelling here, or at least setting a more reasonable budget. Unfortunately the couple then takes out loans or bottoms out their savings on a wedding. It's an absurd waste of of money.
I've been through a big wedding twice now. But times we threw a good party. But we did it without breaking the bank. The first reception was in my parent's back yard and Mom and I did the food in the weeks before.
The second time my husband and I paid the bill. We picked an outdoor venue and spent the money on good food, but limited the bar to beer and wine.
In both cases guested stayed late and went home grinning. Which is the point of a party. No?

I'm with you. I can't imagine spending that on a dress, let alone a one occasion dress.
