You don't ask for 'things.' You ask for help and support in times or need or want. Let's say, for instance, you need a promotion at your job or you wont be able to pay your power bill. You pray to God to help you get this promotion.

If you pray to God for a promotion and then slack off at work, God is not going to do the work for you. But in asking for His support, you have earned it and are then much more backed up in any attempt you make to work harder at your job.
