Firkins are at least gravity fed and don't need a beer engine to draw it out - but unless you keep it slightly pressurized with CO2 (and you really can't with a firkin), it's going to spoil fast. My local pub that does firkin events ends up selling $5 growler fills at the end of the night because it just doesn't keep once tapped.
I would imagine a home cask system would have to be CO2 pressurized at least a little bit over atmospheric pressure.
...which reminds me - time to pick up a 1/6BBL of something tasty.
