It was a life changing experience because, as you stated, your life wasn't going well, then you had hallucinations caused by a non-normal brain state.
Some people believe they were abducted by aliens, encounter incubus or succubus, dead relatives, etc all under the same brain state.
All you have done is misinterpreted this natural, although unusual brain state.
Research: night terrors, hynogogic states, sleep paralysis.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
