Of course I don't want to defend ancient cultures as ideal in every way. Our sciences are hard-won tools that really do make us more effective than they could ever hope to be. No doubt some of the "hardness" of "winning" those tools was due to religious obstinacy in the face of new information, as with Galileo, and with the 20th cent. Scopes monkey trial when there was no excuse for it anymore. 
But it does pay to remember that most bible stories are a province & playground for the rich and powerful to symbolize and justify their dominant way of thinking.
