That strikes me as odd. OK, odd for a hate crime. If he heard something that set him off, that would imply it might have been possible for him to have heard something else and not attacked. I'd rather not speculate this occasion, but the media is already working the hate crime script, and I think there is at least some evidence (as I noted) the crime is more theologically motivated.
