Marriage is not just about taxes. It affects parental duties and rights, inheritance, other financial obligations (in some states, you are liable for your spouse's debts), the right to make healthcare decisions in the event one is incapacitated, and probably some other things that I am forgetting. To get a complete list, you would have to look at the laws of the particular jurisdiction with which you are concerned, as the laws vary from one place to the next. That makes it a very interesting and unique type of contract.
