You're mostly correct.
Sociatal stigma can and does change the meaning of words, but in the case of atheism we can simply go back to its roots and see that it simply means "without God".
That is its universal meaning.
My conclusion is that there is no reason to believe any of the dogmas of traditional theology and, further, that there is no reason to wish that they were true.
