There is a practical limit to how far they could evolve and remain xtians.

THAT is the basic problem with a monotheism - and especially xtianity. A sin is defined by religion as an offense against a god. The problem is - what would an offense against a god be - when that god is the source of everything - ALL EVIL as well as ALL GOOD (One god created everything) - and SAW that what it created was GOOD too!
Of course - in the absence of any proven god - the idea that knows what is a sin - is nonsense
