Hello Mike.
Again, welcome to our little club
Now, to tackle a few of the points that you raise. First of all, I don't think it is really right to say that we have chosen not to believe in the Bible.
In my case I have very little choice as to accept this book as an accurate description of the history of life and an explanation for our very existence I would have to abandon everything I know to be true.
For example, I know that the Universe as we understand it is 13.7 billion years old and started from a single point. The bible would have me believe that everything started a few thousand years ago because God willed it. Not only is there no evidence for this there is also so much evidence to the contrary to accept the latter over the former would, in my opinion, be a nonsense.
Secondly I would have to abandon my understanding and acceptance of evolution and instead believe the biblical account for the history of life on this planet which, again, is simply a quaint little story dreamt up by people many centuries ago who had no understanding about the world around them.
And as for the bible itself as a guide to follow, I cannot help but think of this quote by Richard Dawkins.
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully
As for my parents. I would describe the as non-religious rather than atheist. The subject was never really raised and so I was allowed to 'explore' all these questions for myself rather than have the Christian view imposed upon me at an early and impressionable age. Many children are not that fortunate I'm afraid.
The final part of your message amuses me the most. In it you imply that we (atheists and non Christians) are going to hell when we die and you are not. Have you read this?
This for me is the worst part of Christianity and the very mechanism that the Catholic church used for so many centuries to control and torment the general population into behaving as they dictated.
So, the more I look into your faith the more distasteful I find it and the more I wish that you could open your eyes to the true beauty of reality rather than burying your mind in child like superstition which itself, dictates that you try to 'infect' as many others as you can with it's vile, immoral and unjust teachings.
The question is.. How can I save you?
P.S. As a Christian, what do you make of ManOfGod (another member here) who actually claims to be the Risen Christ himself?
