Popularity is not a measure of truth. Astrology is popular, for example.

How do you know that he was dead wrong?
If Christianity is false, then why is it popular? Why does it have impact on the people?
I know that Duane Gish was wrong, because evolution is an established scientific fact, beyond all rational argument. To deny that evolution takes place is so perverse that it disqualifies ANY one as a legitimate scientist.
The Father Christmas myth is false, as well as popular. Notions of Aryan supremacy are false and popular. Belief in Bigfoot is false and popular. All of these have impacts on people.
A more direct answer to your question is that Christianity is popular because it offers hope, the promise of reward, and a feeling of superiority. It is rather like a theological blowjob.
Question for you: If Christianity is true, why are the majority of people in the world NOT Christians?
