Isn't it better to simply observe your feelings as they happen, do your own analysis, and hopefully get to know yourself better?

I'm always in favour of that but I think you misunderstand me... in writing this post I wasn't recommending anything to Hammy in the sense of 'this is a good thing to do'... but rather just suggesting - given that he was talking about wanting to rate his moods - tools that were available to that end. I don't use this sort of app... my sister does, and I basically have no interest in using such an app... so I wasn't making any judgment about it's psychological usefulness, just that it might be the sort of thing Hammy was looking for, given what he had already said.
