No, this isn't evangelicals who once supported Trump en masse now trying to distance themselves from him and wash their hands of it. This is the evangelical minority that didn't support Trump saying "hey, that huge number that supported him aren't ALL the evangelicals out there."
Which.... is true.
But the evangelicals that supported them are the evangelicals that count, because they're the ones who actually get stuff done rather than sitting around whining about not being noticed. It wouldn't matter if they represented only 1% of evangelicals, so long as they had an impact and the other 99% didn't.
So either these #NotAllEvangelicals are so few as to be irrelevant for all functional purposes, or they're largely-silent bystanders who didn't devote any significant effort to preventing the problem in the first place. (I suspect it's a mix of both.) In the first case, find another home, you're in the wrong spot. And in the second case... while I do have more contempt for the fanatics, the silent bystanders earn quite a bit of it as well. Either way, the brand is tarnished... and would still be now even if it hadn't already been tarnished before Trump was a thing. They do indeed own him.
