Which isn't surprising, since proto-christianity was not an intellectual movement, wouldn't make the attempt to become one for centuries, and not until they appropriated classical thought for themselves.
A smart and well educated person could have known, since the third century bc, not only that the earth was round but even it's rough measurements. Christians weren't smart, well educated people, they were the common rabble - and to this day little has changed on that count. A smart and well educated christian would understand why special creation is a non starter, for example. In fact many of the people instrumental to modern synth were smart, well educated christians. Christianity remains the charismatic movement it has always been, in spite of whatever contributions comparatively greater christian intellects have made.
Bel's a good example of that, as was Saint Tommy. He -was- crazy. Smart too, probably. Hobbled by his place in time and an abusive religion. He thought that god was talking to him and sending him visions..which is pretty damned rare for even the most devout christians today. Just as it's pretty fucking crazy to imagine the shit Bel posted...and yet....

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
