Appeals to authority are in fact legitimate arguments if there is good reason to believe that the authority called upon has specific competence regarding the subject.

Why believe the Catholic church on anything? They have a rampant pedophilia problem, and the Protestants have a major grifter problem with people such as Jim Bakker. They clearly can't be trusted.
