My mistake was washing her new red bra (that hadn't yet been washed) with all of the other stuff.

Actually bras don't get on with scarfs in a tumble dyer. Those little clasps (That I can never undo) get tangled up with the dangly bits on the scarf and the thing becomes one big mess. Cutting bits off stuff with a Stanley knife to untangle it is not the best of ideas, unless you need to catch a bus in like 4 minutes.
