Salary should reflect the scarcity of the (human) resource. Using your above logic, sanitation workers, admin assistants, nurses, teachers & day care workers should be some of the highest paying jobs around as society would literally break down for a good while if you removed them from the game board.

I would indeed call the wheeling and dealing of the financial sector post Glass-Steigall to be at best "unimportant" to the matters of societal functioning in a reductionist sense (after all, a society can run without such and henceforth can be considered optional), at worst an active threat.
Amazing how "importance" is variable.
Scarcity of resources, however...
