Theists: Why do you love God?
December 30, 2011 at 6:59 am
(This post was last modified: December 30, 2011 at 6:59 am by Welsh cake.)
The question perplexes me enough that I felt the need to discuss it. A question primarily aimed at theists, but non-theists can feel free to voice your informed-opinions on the topic matter.
Why do you love the God/deity you believe in? Why do you love a transcendental creator being that you cannot even interact directly with; that cannot show affection, comfort, or spend a moment of the day embracing to let each other know how you both feel?
I'm not talking about if God as a 'person' is worthy of love here, or deserves love. Across history there have been an abundance of detestable egoistical people, vile tyrants unworthy of love, who are loved all the time. I personally know a good few anti-socials who can't or won't reciprocate have yet still somehow won people's confidence and devotion, loved by the entire community, and mourned when they pass away.
I'm asking what your God has done for you to feel these emotions. Why do you feel compassion and kindness for a remote God yet not all of humanity that lives alongside you? What are your conditions for loving him/her/it?
Just why do you love your deity more than anyone else alive or dead?

And what about the worship thing?
If it was proven that god made the universe etc I'd think 'thats interesting' but would not worship. (caveat: I dont think this at all likely to ever be done)
Why do theists insist on abasing themselves, I dont understand this desire at all.

Replying because I think it's an interesting question...
Is it a question of what you're getting out of it? I wouldn't compare it to physical relationships. They're just different & that would be silly. Athough there is some crossover... both relate to us.

Well, there are Gods to be loved, and Gods to be feared.
And why not, I mean?
Why do some people love, say, Britney Spears?

'Why do some people love, say, Britney Spears?'
Because she's real. And easy.

How do you know that God isn't?

There is no reason to believe a god does exist, there has never been proof, it is a man made 'ideal' thought up by curious people in desperate need of answers for questions they feel need answering. Alas it is not an answer, now it is used by the religious to fill in the gaps science has yet to fill, but those gaps are getting smaller year by year, Mehmet. Britney Spears on the other hand I have seen and is verifiably real, unfortunately.
