If the church is fine with performing the ceremony, I don't see why not.

But of course religion just couldn't pass up the opportunity to control yet another aspect of peoples lives could they?

And why shouldn't two people regardless of sexual orientation be married in any way they wish?
Apart from the reasons of your obvious homophobic bigotry and the churches outdated angry desert deity credo?

Firstly marriage is a religious sacrament

No it is not ...it was stolen from a pagan service denoting the inheritance of property.

Well of course you would be as you know nothing of the legalities of a civil partnership

As the Catholic church is the biggest franchise of paedophiles an d money launderers on the globe at the moment I fail to see why they are so reticent to make even MORE money from their fees for their services.

Catholic church= try hard wannabe Jewish money lenders.

Gonna keep it simple.

If you don't like gay marriage, don't get one.

If the church doesn't like gay marriage, nobody cares; marriage is a legal institution rather than a 'spiritual' one these days, anyways. And if some gay dudes/chicks wanna get married in a church that isn't down with it, well, their own fault for devoting their lives to an organization that openly declares them to be subhuman slimeball sinners; not my problem, nor anyone else's.

Finally, Christians do NOT know the meaning of the words "attacks on [x]." Quit throwing around the "attacks against the church" BS because nobody buys it. Except your fellow delusionists, and really, I'm fast learning I have little tolerance for their infantile whining shrieks about "being attacked." Here I'm sitting here in a country dominated by Christians, having Christian-moral-backed legislature forced on me at every fucking turn AND I'M GETTING SICK OF LISTENING TO YOU PISSES SOBBING ABOUT ANYTHING ANY TIME ANYONE NOT A CHRISTIAN DARES SAY ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT A BUNCH OF FREAKS YOU ALL ARE.

...Wow...I'm pissed today...

That is precisely the point, what takes precedence in a situation where the Church is not happy to perform the ceremony? The "right" of the gay couple to have an equal opportunity to be married in a Catholic Church or the right of the Church to refuse on grounds of belief about same sex marriage?

You are missing the point: the church is NOT being forced, as far as I can tell, to perform the ceremonies.

Considering the plethora of churches within a mile of my house, I assume that it's because not all Christians agree with doctrine and therefore anyone who doesn't like the statutes of one church will leave and go to another. You are safe in your bigotry, my friend. You can't control what the rest of Christianity does anymore than I can the rest of atheism. And I wouldn't want to.

Nobody should be forced to marry two people if it goes against their beliefs. Ultimately, this is why I am favour of government getting out of the marriage business. They have no right to tell any two consenting people that they cannot marry. Marriage is what you decide it is, not the commercial and statist thing it has become.

YET, at the moment there is no way of legally challenging the Church, once "marriage" is legalised between same sex couples, the Church is open to the legal challenge through the European court of human rights (which has a history of overturning UK courts, it has recently overturned UK law that prevented murderers, rapists and paedophiles from being allowed to vote, saying it was their human right to vote!) What happens then, if the court rules it unlawful to refuse to perform same sex marriages?

Depends on which nation you're in, and what status you're going for. Marriage is, as you said, what you decide it is. If everyone decides it's a commercial/statist thing...well, then, it's a commercial/statist thing, as according to those who hold to that perception, right?

I know it's a legal status in the US, which is the actual point of contention for gay marriage here. Well, ok, also the fundies and evangelicals shrieking about it being wrong and them having far more voting power than most other groups, but also because the tax writeoffs and breaks which were designed for child-rearing. Which I always found a weak argument in and of itself, given how many gay couples tend to adopt...
