I hear, btw, that Portal is free now? If you could run that......there's a nice game.

Padraic,
Going through this thread I would be confused too and I game a lot. I know an easy way to get into gaming that would allow you to test drive most of the games that have been mentioned for free. Get a Steam account, they are free, and look for demos. That way you can play different games for free to see what you might like to play. You can get started at store.steampowered.com/ just click the "install steam" link and then browse the store. You can view trailers for games and many of them will have demos available.
There is a large amount of abandonware available online too but they can be hard to deal with due to backwards compatability problems.

Thanks Rhizo;
I have set up a Steam account and downloaded Directx.
Now have a few games; Portal,Halo, Battle for Wesnoth, Age of Empires 11 and am obtaining Deus Ex Revolution. I think I have enough for a bit.
Addendum
POO BUM PISS WEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!L Deus Ex Revolution does not run on win 7. I DO have an old PC with XP;core duo,2.33 ghz processor,4GB RAM but only 5000mb graphics card.Would it work on that?

DE: Human Revolution should run on Windows 7. It does for mine. Did you "acquire" it through illegitimate means? Certain games won't work through that, and I'm not going to help you get around it if that's the case.
Also, I think you're mistaken about the specs of your old XP. No graphics card on the market has 5000MB of memory.
That equals 5GB, which is a full gigabyte more than the best version of the HD 7970, arguably the best card on the planet prior to the release of the GTX 680.

It should work on that PC. I know it runs on Win7. Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers for your video card. You can actually get them very quickly via the menu on the Steam client.

The last time I installed the latest graphics driver (via Nvidia home) the system shat itself and I had to roll it back.
After installing Deus-ex ,I could not get it to work.
I Googled 'cannot run Deus Ex Human Revolution to run on Win 7" Found claims it will not work on Win 7.
I uninstalled it,but can install it again.
I will do some more searching asking a different question IE "How to run Deus Ex on Win 7"
I am not for a second discounting your advice,which I appreciate,thank you.

Go into computer store. Take out phone. Snap picture of serial. Activate by phone.

Whoa, NO! Bad idea. Someone's going to buy a game and realize you've already activated the key. Really? That's no different than creeping into a dude's house and snatching the game from his PC. Actually it's worse, since Steam would cover that.

I was talking about from a computer... it was late when I posted that. I'd never take a serial from a game.
