Quite a few famous figures were born and/or have lived in my hometown. This is just a sample:
- Jerome K Jerome (
3 Men In A Boat)
- Tom Major-Ball a.k.a. John "Oh yes, Norma" Major's dad
- Noddy Holder, Slade frontman (
"IT'S CHRIIIIIIIIIISTMAAAAAAAAAS!") - incidentally, my Dad tells me how he used to help Slade set up for their early gigs
- The Honourable Sue Nicholls,
actress (Corrie's Audrey Roberts, but forever in my heart as the sternutationally-challenged Miss Popov from Rentaghost)
- Don Gilet,
actor (Runaway Bride Donna's fiancé and, later, EastEnders' homicidally duplicitous preacher Lucas Johnson)
- Rob Halford of Judas Priest
- Meera 'Kumars At No 10' Syal
- Frank 'Z-Cars' Windsor
- Drum 'n' Bassman Goldie
An interesting little aside: although not from around here, John Wesley of Methodist fame was almost lynched by an angry mob who took exception to the tone of one of his sermons, close to the old Court House just down the road from where I'm sitting.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
