Certainly in physics is no such thing as nothing : because even in
a vacuum there will be energy but absolute nothing cannot exist
any way because of the Uncertainty Principle which states that
an electron can be anywhere at any given point in time in the
Universe : for electrons though sub atomic are matter never
the less then the concept of nothing is no longer a scientific
question : this is the perfect riposte to any body asking the
question how something can arise out of nothing : simple
there is no such thing and this shall continue to be so for
as long as matter exists : this maybe quite a while now
that apparently electrons can exist for ever as far as is
currently known so question is then an academic one
far as science matters so is more one for philosophy

Quote:Stop. You have just proposed a hypothesis whereby nothing exists.

For the fun of entertaining.

Quote: Therefore: nothing exists.

Incorrect. Smile Self-refuting concepts such as that invalidate themselves. As stated on wiki:

"Self-refuting ideas are ideas or statements whose falsehood is a logical consequence of the act or situation of holding them to be true."

Hence, by definition alone, nothing states itself can not exist. But someone can feel free to show me where in existence I can find nothing..

Nothing doesn't state it can't exist. What gives you the idea that it does? 0.o

So, basically what I've gathered from this discussion is that true nothing isn't possible because it'd be something. So ex nehilo then is just a dated concept based on a simplistic understanding of the universe? I doubt theists ever thought of "nothing" as being no space or time before it was pointed out that empty space isn't "nothing" anymore. Before I learned about the modern theistic understanding of "nothing" I always thought of "nothing" as dark empty space in a vacuum. That's probably what theists thought of as too until the past 100 years.

Why wouldn't nothing be something? You people are just plain weird. That's me being serious this time.

The only way to adequately discuss this subject is to not discuss this subject.

Nothing is only a label we give something in language as we use it. In terms of reality it is just the absence of something which doesn't really mean anything. Nothing doesn't exist and therefore by its own meaning there is no such thing as nothing. Existence always was and always will be. It is a self proving fact. There never was a nothing and there never will be.

The Universe = nothing. According to Stephen Hawking anyway - there is the same amount of anti matter in the universe as matter, therefore the mass of the universe is nothing. So actually everything is nothing.

It also gets around the xtian "how can something come from nothing" argument, because everything is nothing anyway!

Quite the brain bender.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.
