What might be cool after a necro-post awakens a long dead thread, if discussion takes off again perhaps a mod could give the older part of the thread a light yellow, pink or blue wash to make it clear where the living 'tissue' of the thread is. Of course, that may be more bother than it's worth in practice.
I would tend to agree. But if you want to answer a question in a long dead thread, why not create a new one? After all, all the people that no longer participate cannot answer questions the necroposter may have of them, and all the people who haven't answered the thread yet can answer, and all the people who have answered can answer again.
My problem is that I get four pages in and then realize that this thread happened 9 months ago.

As a human being with a brain and a functioning capacity for empathy, all I can choose from on this list is democratic socialism. I can't justify the exploitation of other human beings enough for the rest.

I am not a socialist because I don't like the idea for an interventive State, amongst other things - Are you telling me that if I'm not a socialist I support Human beings' exploitation?  And do you think I don't possess empathy? That seems a little self centred to me - 'Only my personal political view is right' - I was once a socialist and I know the reasons, but it's definitely not the only system to help society - And don't forget, socialist is not exactly a political regime, but an economical system alongside capitalism, there is no socialist country around the world except for China or N.Korea and it wouldn't work, all countries tend to use a mixed system with capitalism and socialism because they know it's childish to use just one of them.

I answered other - I'd say I'm some kind of social democrat more on the right but with some liberal social views. In the UK, that would make you a Liberal Democrat. Problem is you'd have Nick Clegg as your party Leader. During his recent co-leadership with the Conservatives, he's done so much to damage the rep of the Lib Dems that the UK's effectively becoming a 2-party system. Anyone would think it's been deliberately planned... #conspiracytheoriesRus

It's just money... all 3 party leaders are millionaires backed by lobbyists out of touch with average society.
I just don't know who is worse... the parties selling themselves or the mugs who keep voting for them and claim no responsibility.

I tend to think that lack of religion will lead to "socially liberal", consistent with libertarian, as an interventionist attitude about personal life choices won't have any basis without religion. If you don't think that certain lifestyle choices of no harm to anyone else won't anger an invisible sky daddy, why should the government get involved? There may be exceptions to this rule but I don't know of many atheists who are social conservatives.
Economic issues are another matter and more related to what people think works.

Well maybe in the UK I'd be a right wing liberal then, but I don't like to label myself as liberal because sometimes I disagree with them as much as I disagree with conservatives - This depends a lot on where you live, historical and cultural contexts, etc - What is left or right in the UK may be different from what is left or right in the US - Over here socialists/liberals/lefties are the kind of people who think Islamophobia should be a crime, who defend affirmative action, who label anyone that disagrees with them as a racist, bigot or sexist and I am overall pretty annoyed by some of their arguments. I see liberals here in Europe as having good measures for social acceptance and social policies (EG Pro-gay marriage, Pro-choice, etc.) but I prefer the economical measures of European conservatives (not so hardcore as American Republicans) or European social democrats (center-right).
Usually my conservative friends like my views on economics but start being skeptical of my political orientation as soon as I say I'm an atheist, and my liberal friends love my social views and atheism, but they get annoyed when I tell them I prefer regulated capitalism over socialism anyday - In the end, I think it's safe to say I annoy people with all political orientations to an extent, and that's why I am better off classifying myself as an independent - I'll criticize right wing nationalists as much as commies or anarchists, and they will hate me with a passion. I like to chose the best political measure based on what I think is better for society and not because my political orientation tells me so.

Touched on this in the left-right political test thread, but I have no idea what I'd be. Pretty centrist fiscally and as socially liberal as you can think. Apparently Libertarian might fit, but Libertarians have such a broad sprectrum of views that I don't find the label particularly helpful.
