What you are asking is how can one have higher functions of self-awareness without any cortical influence. I have. When I was quite young I had a singular experience with a "ghost" in a townhome I lived in. I recently discovered the phenomena of sleep paralysis that basically explained the entire encounter.

I've had sleep paralysis experiences. It is still the single most surreal experience of my entire life. Hated it.

I've never really believed in disembodied spirits, but there was a time that I thought perhaps "ghost phenomena" were explainable as emotional and/or psychic echoes (I'm sure we've all heard this idea). It actually made sense to me until I realized that emotions and thoughts, no matter how strong, cannot directly influence the world except through the actions of a person. If thoughts and emotions can be "broadcast" beyond the brain that manufactures them, I am unaware of the process that accomplishes it.
