Oddly, Herod Antipas, Philip and Archelaus were called Tetrachs since Herod the Great's kingdom was divided among them. With later additions by Claudius Herod Agrippa's kingdom was soon the same size as Herod the Great's had been. When Herod Agrippa I died in 44 his son was too young to ascend the throne and the Romans were forced to resort to the procurator expedient...and the shit hit the fan.
I was under the impression that he was a mere Enthrarch.

My bad! I was confusing Agrippa with Archelaus! I find the the Herods to be somewhat similar to the Jacksons. I only accurately remember the one accused of mis-treating children!!

Ah, yes....Archelaus. Interesting character and another one of those points in history where we have to take what "historians" say cum grano salis....to maintain the Latin flavor of this post.
The nobility petitioned Augustus to remove him as tetrarch and the nobility included the priests. There was actually some small scale rioting in the wake of Archelaus removal but it was easily suppressed by local forces without summoning the legions.

Scroll down to Chapter 8 and continue from there.
Remember, Josephus was a member of a noble family and thus never satisfied with any member of the Herodian family who they considered Arabs.
Herod, like Caligula and Nero is one of those figures in history about whom the only writings we have are by their enemies.
Thanks. I have read Josephus, but like the Bible, I do not remember all of the details. Thanks again.

So Herod Archelaus invented the Jesus myth, so he could become king?

No..... he was king - or at least tetrarch - as a result of being Herod the Great's son. I suspect the whole jesus bullshit story was a much later invention.
