Comment hidden due to its highly distressing nature.

I don't even have words.

No need for words. You said it all.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Just remember....guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Yep. Without an automatic rifle this nut could have walked up and down the aisle with a knife and attained the same death/injury toll.

such a sorrowful waste. How does a parent/sibling deal with the fact that their child/sister was gunned down in a local movie theater? I do not know.

My friend, Chaz, lives in Aurora. He is also a Batman fanatic. When I first heard of this, my stomach turned. I tried to call him, but no answer, so I looked at his facebook. He had just posted an update saying he was okay. He and his girlfriend had planned on going to that screening, but she had gotten sick at dinner. They gave the tickets to his little sister and her friend. They were there, but were thankfully unharmed.

This is a horrible thing. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families.

Goodness, that's rough. I'm glad everyone is alright.

I really can't even begin to understand the kind of mindset a person must have to commit such a horrible act. I can guess the guy is probably some form of sociopath, but what could possibly motivate somebody to such a random act of horrible violence?

The witness accounts are simply heartbreaking. All I can add is that it's such a sad, selfish thing when someone feels it necessary to take something nice, something normal, something that gives people pleasure and destroy it just because they can.

I too think that this is absolutely insane, incomprehensible, can't even imagine what the families are going through, my prayers have gone out for all involved. What I really hate in this situation there's no way man can truly bring justice to all the victims of such a horrible crime.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Agreed ... but giving the perp the death penalty is a step in the right direction.
(and before you all go ape shit on me ... what if it was your son or daughter that you never got to see again because this guy shot him/her in the head at a movie theater?)

More psychopath than sociopath, but possibly a psychotic break. That's what seems to fuel a lot of spree killings or mass murders. There is the possibility that whoever did this did it for fun, or just to cause as much pain as possible.

Without spinning this into another divergent discussion on the ethics of the death penalty, I will say that I do not agree that this individual should be given the death penalty. Looking at it from the hypothetical point of view you provided, I would say the same thing; whether it's my own child or someone else's child, I would still not condone the state-sanctioned killing of any individual.

Mm, certainly a possibility. I simply cannot fathom (having a relatively healthy brain and such) how somebody could do something so heinous.

A side, side, side, side-note: I am impressed by the lack of speculative trolling against theists in this thread. One of my friends turns every bad event into a rant against the Catholic church. So, thanks I guess.
“The truth of our faith becomes a matter of ridicule among the infidels if any Catholic, not gifted with the necessary scientific learning, presents as dogma what scientific scrutiny shows to be false.”
