I was brought up Catholic, and attended Catholic schools. We were encouraged not to actually read the bible, lest we misinterpret or become confused . (really) Besides, that kind of thing tended to end in in tears as the questioner often received a thick ear for impertinence. Instead, we were encouraged to read say 'Imitation Of Christ' or hagiographies of various saints. I got the distinct impression the Church has never forgiven Gutenberg.
The best way to get a teenage boy to do something is tell him he musn't. So naturally I read the bible cover-to-cover. I remember being bored by the begats, pleasantly surprised by "The Song Of Solomon" and thinking the author of Revelations must have been on acid.

I do have recollection that for years the catholic church wouldn't allow the bible to be printed in any language other than Latin for fear that the masses would discover what a load of rubbish it is.
People like Godschild prove their fears were baseless.

Isn't it funny how atheists know more about the bible than Christians?

What's even funnier is the number of atheists here that were good christians until they actually read the bible.

I set out to read the bible when I was a teenager, but after so many "begats" I said, "fuck this" and skipped right to the bloody ending, Revelations. About six months ago I decided I would read the NT, so I could actually engage in the debates here. I realized quite quickly that it was not worth the trouble, and the boredom was not worth the ability to debate its veracity.

I have to say I agree Faith No More. When I read the entire thing cover to cover I still considered myself a christian. At the time I was in college and attending an all gay church. I felt that I was missing something from my religious understandings so I went ahead and read the whole damn thing. I still claim that the only reason I made it through was because at the time I thought I believed that bullshit. Then I finally woke up to the truth, tried a few times since then to read it again, never make it past a single book of the damn thing. It's just so boring. Like a terribly written fantasy book.

Holy fuck that was funny! "Nearly naked, body all ripped,....". Oh, fuck me. I'm still laughing but can no longer piss myself since I've emptied the tank.

Nope.
I think I've only ever read at most one page from that awful excuse of literature.
Even JK Rowling is a better author than the dumb fuck/s who wrote that convoluted piece of shyte, and she's bloody crap as well.

I'm reading it all the way through right now. Don't laugh at me, but I really had trouble following the story of Joseph (and the technicolor dream coat) at the end of Genesis. I forget everyone's name too.

I was given one by my parents but I don't read it. It's a reference I don't find much use for.
