The downfall of Greece (yet again, for any historians around) is profoundly saddening,

Why? The downfall of Greece seems to have happened often enough to be routine.

Greece practically invented the modern world,

Uh, no. When the modern world was being invented, the greeks were in no position to do any inventing.

to see the greatest contributor to modernity in such harsh condition is rather worrying.

It's not worrying, even if the bit about the contributor were true. It is rather reassuring that the world would reward present merit rather than past glory.

I genuinely heard someone criticise the EU support policy, saying 'what did Greece ever provide us with?', I'll leave you on this somber allegory of society and judge it as you will.

Sorry to say, but modern Greece has pretty much been a pawn and a parasite feeding off western world's overly sentimental attachment to a romanticized version of a totally different greece that was extinguished 2000 years ago.
