Why are YOU an Atheist?

RE: Why are YOU an Atheist?
Quote:How do you judge what is fictional vs nonfictional? What's the judging process?

The same process you use with other books. If a history book talks about something physically impossible and/or that doesn't make any sense according to other historical data, then it's fiction.

Herodotus, the "father of history" himself, engaged in a good deal of fiction, so no one takes his accounts at face value anymore.

RE: Why are YOU an Atheist?
Update:

Why am I an atheist? I wish I knew the answer to that. Nothing has convinced me and I wish that I knew "why" that that is the case. Why should there be a "why" anyhow? I am not really seriously looking for a "reason", I am looking for an explanation. Or perhaps I am searching for a "cause". I would prefer it if I was asked how it is that I am an atheist than why it is that I am an atheist.

I pose to the theists: Why are you not an atheist? Or maybe in other words: Why are you a theist? And if or maybe when they, like me, do not like that "why" question posed to them, then instead I pose to them: "Okay, forget the "why", how are you a theist? Forget the reason, what is the explanation? Forget about purpose, tell me about what you believe to be the cause. If or maybe when you do not believe that it is caused, then please discuss with me about probability. Not happy with any of the questions or maybe statements that I pose to you? Then please explain to me how it is that I am creating a false dillema. Do you think that I am closing the options by insisting that I may or may not be creating a false dilemma? If or maybe when that that is genuinely the case then please explain to me how when I "open" the possibility (open the " logical possibility door" shall we say) of myself creating a false dilemma, how that that itself can possibly be a false dilemma. Logically speaking, that is, naturally. Because, after all, that would be included in the tautologically logical realm of logical possibility.

If or maybe when you cannot explain, please describe instead. And I will not fall into the argument from ignorance, I will accept that if or maybe when you cannot explain or maybe describe what you think that you ought to explain or describe, to me, to my satisfaction, then, naturally, that does not mean that I am right. Of course it doesn't, I accept that. But it also, naturally, doesn't mean that you are right either. In my opinion, I think that you, however, [hypothetical theist], should also accept that too.

You may explain or possibly describe to me otherwise, if or maybe when you so wish, so long as you do not go all overly dogmatic on me. If or maybe when you preach to me then it is my belief that I am of course indeed entitled to my opinion that you are preaching more for your own benefit than for mine, but I do accept that you may indeed naturally genuinely believe that you are doing it for my benefit, or for the benefit of others beyond yourself. So my opinion, that I am entitled to remember, of course (and you're entitled to yours [hypothetical theist] of course) is that you are selfish in one sense but maybe or maybe not selfless in another, and I feel that way about myself too by the way, when it comes to alturism anyways. It is perhaps unfortunate for you that the laws of the universe that governs us all leads to me not sharing your beliefs and thus disappointing you. If you do not wish to convert me then... awesome. That's good enough for me and, of course, "good enough for me" is good enough for me."

If or maybe when I seem annoying or perhaps petty, please say so.

RE: Why are YOU an Atheist?
Not much of an update on my part.

I still don't care.

The question of god or gods is not relevant to my existence.

All of those arguments can simply be responded to as "So what?"

The fact that I don't care, and no theist has managed to persuade me otherwise, should be deeply concerning to the religiously devout who claim to care about the truth.

Religion is boring. So many wasted Sundays.

Pretty much this.

I have no care nor inclination to care about the claims made about gods unless there is evidence to back them up.

Live and let live. But unfortunately, this is something that many religious folk refuse to abide by, so I sharpen my knife ready to stick it into their attempts to convert me.

I think the claims religions makes are fundamentally scientific regarding the nature of the universe and therefore ought to have some backing with real physical evidence of some kind. If God was somehow involved in evolution for instance then there will have to be some kind of evidence we can see and study. If someone can provide such evidence and win their Nobel Prize then I will look at the faith based belief systems we have with much more interest. Then of course you have all these spirits that can possess people and be cast out into a herd of pigs and so on. You bet there would be evidence for anything like that if it were happening, unless it only happened in the past history.

RE: Why are YOU an Atheist?
Everyone was born an Atheist, and then some are taught by family and/or peers to buy into their immortal granting cult, because the more people you get to buy into it, the more true it feels.

I'll give credit to me being an Atheist to the Internet, providing frank alternate views to what I'm subjected to by my local society... it gave me lots to think about, and plenty of information to allow myself the opportunity to approach life with an open mind... to think for myself.

Religions are hard beliefs to shake if you, as I have, were indoctrinated as a young child... I am still a bit bitter that I was duped at such a young vulnerable age, so I guess that makes me the "Angry Atheist".

I don't care what other people believe, but I will not tolerate anyone stating that my non-belief is "wrong" or quietly listen to any reference of them going to heaven while I will burn in hell. This is a rude arrogance that most Christians/Muslims fail to recognize... my Mother stopped talking to me for months after I decided that I have had enough, and drew the line.

RE: Why are YOU an Atheist?
People have lots of reasons as to why they don't believe. The irony is that everyone is an atheist to some degree. If you believe in Jesus but not Allah then you lack belief in Allah, and I am sure that if you believe in Jesus you'd also lack belief in all other gods as well.

The only difference between an atheist and a theist is that we lack belief in one more god than the believer does.

While I accept that the existence or nonexistence of a deity cannot be truly proven, I base my atheism off of the extreme probability that there exists no such deity.
I march against the Asagods
To bring the end of time.
I am pure and endless pain
And Surtr is my name.

See me rise, the mighty Surt,
Destroyer of the universe.
Bringer of flames and endless hurt
Scorcher of men and Earth.
