The stakes are high, public culture is reputation-based and legal fights are nothing but dirty.
When you look at it, only "boring" crimes and accusations leave you mostly unharmed.
Scandalous ones, like rape, abuse, drug use are enough to ruin even an innocent man's reputation, as employers are risk-adverse as all get out.

Robert Downey Jr. works in motherfucking Hollywood!
You're entire point is invalid.
Unless you're in specific industries, the prevailing mode of thought is what I outlined.
Hell, the last time I visited a friend at Boeing, I felt like I was pulled into Dilbert with an avionics-twist.
Try discussing drug use there.

Hollywood does have insurance agencies that insure actors to fulfill their contracts. That's why Lindsey Lohan wasn't in movies for a bit there... She was uninsurable, nobody believed she'd complete her contractual obligations. Hmm... A business that makes money off of actors' drug problems... A bit unethical, if you don't mind me saying.

Suddenly, the phrase "Tickle Me Elmo" has become unimaginably creepy, and I'll never look at my childhood the same way again.
Luke: You don't believe in the Force, do you?
Han Solo: Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.
