Another quote from Charles Bradlaugh, a man who pre-emptively defined atheism long before the religious whackjobs of today were saying that atheists "believe there is no god."
Quote:"The atheist does not say "there is no God," but he says "I know not what you mean by God; I am without idea of God; the word ´God´ is to me a sound conveying no clear or distinct affirmation." ... The Bible God I deny; the Christian God I disbelieve in; but I am not rash enough to say there is no God as long as you tell me you are unprepared to define God to me."
"The smallest effort is not lost. Each wavelet on the ocean lost aids in the ebb-tide or the flow; each rain-drop makes some floweret blow; each struggle lessens human woe".
- Charles Mackay
From Williams Jennings Bryan, 19th Century Congressman, 20th Century Secretary of State, Author, Attorney During the Monkey Trial, and Raving Lunatic.
Keep in mind this guy was a 3-time presidential candidate. Where would we be if this had ever led our country? Quote:"If we have to give up either religion or education, we should give up education."
The home-schooling crowd still agrees with Bryan, Creed.
Quote:If I thought the Jews killed God, I’d worship the Jews.
From Mikhail Bakunin, founder of nihilism:
Quote:"People go to church for the same reasons they go to a tavern: to stupefy themselves, to forget their misery, to imagine themselves, for a few minutes anyway, free and happy."
Another Mikail Bakunin quote:
Quote:"For ten centuries Christianity, armed with the omnipotence of the Church and State and opposed by no competition, was able to deprave, debase, and falsify the mind of Europe. It had no competitors, because outside the Church there was neither thinkers nor educated persons. It alone taught, it alone spoke and wrote, it alone taught." He called it a Russian Proverb but I'll credit him. Great guy. "The church is near, but the road is icy. The tavern is far, but I will walk carefully. -- Dr. Cecil Cody, c. 1969 (December 22, 2012 at 8:04 am)Creed of Heresy Wrote: Another quote from Charles Bradlaugh, a man who pre-emptively defined atheism long before the religious whackjobs of today were saying that atheists "believe there is no god." This is nice and all, and would make by his quote, make me an agnostic atheist(but strictly in a semantic future tense sense). I hold no belief in any current claim of any type of god. But the future has not happened, but even then, I do not see a future where a plausible "God/god/deity" will ever prove to be a possibility. My current position is there is no god. My strictly semantic "technical" view of the future is "I don't know", but I still place my bets on a god not existing, or even necessary. |
