The only reason I'd be scared of asking is because the last time I tried to make a commitment to someone where I felt ballsy (I wasn't even asking him to marry me) I was cut down like a calf for slaughter. So now I always wait for them to bring it up.
David is just the kind of guy who'd want to plan something like that as a surprise though, so I wouldn't want to take that away from him. He likes being alpha, and I like him being that way, so it works.
If someone is with their partner and there isn't that sort of relationship, though, and you're comfortable being in the lead in some way - go for it!

Well given as I am not a traditionalist and I believe in progressive agendas...yeah, a girl asking the guy to marry her is awesome. The expectation that men are the ones that always have to put their ego on the line for love kind of seems biased to me and...I dunno, it kind of takes away from the relationship. If I was dating a girl I really really liked, and I was mulling over whether or not to marry her and SHE was the one who popped the question? Holy shit I'd love that girl til the end of our lives.

My wife asked me on Feb 29th a few leap years ago.

I remember bitching about getting married (the second time) all the way to the justice of the peace.
(then giggling and blushing like an asshole -an asshole very much in love, mind you- all the way home)
The particulars of my marriage are a constant source of amused bewilderment to me, I'm certain that whatever part of me handles my end in maintaining it is noticeably absent whenever I consider it. But then again, I wouldn't have the slightest as to what part of me -does it- for my wife.......so that might be it right there. Far from traditional, as was our extended and unofficial engagement, but we manage to be at least grudgingly happy, most of the time.
Success!
I don't think it's very important who asks, or even if anyone actually asks at all. Personally, I think our divergence from tradition is one of my favorite aspects of our relationship - though she may not - but as a husband, I retain the right to cease wondering about what she thinks..........

Marriage; I'd rather spend the money on travel, dinners and goin'out....or guns .
Obviously, I am not her prince on a white horse. I am a frog that won't change after kissing.
But please do ask me for marriage, 'cause I wouldn't.

I'd be all for it but just a word of caution. Generally, in today's time, when a woman gets on her knees, the man isn't expecting a ring.
