Guns have a civilizing effect?
NZ has VERY strict gun laws and, while there is some gun crime, and several people have been shot and killed in the past few years by armed police (and not the entire police force is armed, either), it is very high up on the safest countries to live in.
I think they made number one last year.

The mythical "Good Guy With A Gun" is preached far and wide here. It causes people to go armed when there's no need to do so and increases the need for a "Rational Guy Without A Gun" to try and defuse a situation where the GGWAG is about to open fire without a clear idea of what's going on.

What is even worse is a defective weapon and its manufacturer that refuses to do anything about it. I saw a report last Sunday on 60 Minutes about the Remington 700, a rifle that has a trigger mechanism that jiggles when handled without anyone's finger being anywhere near the trigger. Hundreds of complaints by customers, a man with one son dead and another one arrested and jailed for no good reason, and Remington company looks the other way.

The Remy 7 was a blight on the brand. This a rifle known for it's accuracy, affordability, and reliability. 200 years destroyed with a single model. To say they refuse to do anything about it, though, is just odd. There was a voluntarily initiated recall and reimbursement program. More than that, everything about their brand, now, is the attempt to overcome that issue. The manufacturers themselves are better than our government, when it comes to gun related issues. We've got ccongresscritters buried so deeply into the pockets of the nra that they'd have never mentioned it, and probably denied that it happened if asked.
While Remy has a case in aftermarket trigger housing modifications.....they still take remy 7's sent to them on account of the bad press. They can't afford not to. There's actually -no- manufacturer who wont accept a rifle sent to them /w any complaint whatsoever postage paid by the manufacturer...in case anyone was unawares. It' not as if it's not a competitive market for a high priced commodity.

Minor point of correction. The law refers to "assault weapons", not assault rifles. I have a 22lr that's an "assault weapon" under their law, but that doesn't make it an assault rifle (and I certainly wouldn't go to war with it, unless it was a war against squirrels). Sort of a strange way to phrase a ruling, mentioning that assault rifles are weapons of war (yeah......no shit) in a challenge to a law regarding "assault weapons". Have we finally reached the point in the gun debate where something becomes an assault rifle by virtue of being misidentified as such? What would assault rifles being weapons of war have to do with my 22lr?

No 7 states have banned them. What happened in Maryland is that a couple of ammosexuals sued to overturn the law and the Appeals court told them to go fuck themselves.
